Region of Waterloo International Airport - YKF
Westjet is changing their flight departures from YKF.

This is probably good news for most travelers.

Cheapest return flight I can find is $500 to Calgary.

Crazy since I can fly return from BUF to MCO for less than half that.

I found the early morning flight nice to be able to connect in Calgary to get to Vancouver with most of the day leftover. I was looking at going to San Fransisco in October and now there's an 11 hour layover... probably just gonna have to go to Pearson for that one.

Totally... you can fly to Mexico City round trip for $370 without layovers and with free drinks on board  Rolleyes

The utility of this airport is for flying lessons, small private flights, etc. It is nowhere near being a commercially useful airport. Kinda sad actually.

I am under the impression that flights in the US, specifically airport fees, are substantially more subsidized than here.

I don't know the specifics of the routes (although, the route you quote is between two much larger airports), but that usually plays a big part in the higher cost of flights in Canada.

So in theory there's a B-29 parked at YKF today:

I think it's there even in practice: a photo in the Record article. Smile

I liked the early flight. I was just on a sold out flight last week and made it to Vancouver by 10:00 am. Now that you can't get anywhere but YYC or YVR same day from YKF its back to Pearson for me. I was looking forward to getting into other West coast destinations with the early flights. This airport is so frustrating.

Chris Wood, General Manager of the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) was on CBC (89.1) radio this morning talking about Avia NG, terminal expansion and runway extension.  He was very hopeful that next year the airport would attract one or more airlines to serve this area.  He mentioned that talks are ongoing with Enerjet and Jetlines.  What I found most interesting is that Avia NG will be doing study about expanding the terminal and extending the runway.

Here is a quote from Avia NG:

Quote:Avia NG and its partners were recently pre-qualified for a major airside expansion project at the Region of Waterloo International Airport (CYKF) which includes an air terminal expansion program, runway extension environmental assessment, airport zoning regulation updates and a rail feasibility study.

There was some talk about building a GO station in Breslau.  If they could bring the station a bit further south it could serve the airport.  An intriguing idea for now...
