Nope, that’s standard variable frequency drive nosies.... common on all modern LRV’s, roller coaster drive wheels, my Prius, and the machines I design Smile

There is a whole subset of Japanese train fan that track the train noises based on the type of inverter. VVVF, IGBT, etc... I love it!

I know controller whine, this was squeaky wheels.  Lots of them, unified into a continuous shriek.

Edit: Or a controller whine the likes of which I've never heard before. Haven't heard it from Toronto's Flexity Outlooks though, which is why I've been hoping it would go away once our vehicles wore-in.

I hear the motor controller noises, plus a touch of flange-to-rail contact noise through the curves (which should go away once the lubricators are activated).

You probably don't notice it on the TTC's FLEXITY Outlooks, because they're very rarely crawling along this slowly! They generally are moving through the low-speed phase very quickly as they accelerate.

They are testing/timing all the crossings.
  • Pre-emption time (if applicable)
  • Warning time
  • Recovery time

Do I understand from the timing of your messages that they got from the OMSF to Willis Way in 4 minutes? That seems almost unbelievably fast, even for an almost-straight, road-pre-empting LRT route.

It was fast, but keep in mind there’s probably +\- 2 or 3 minutes to my posts relative to the event occurring, ijmorlan. It would not be a direct correlation that could be used for accurate timing. They are moving between UWaterloo and Willis Way only.

I saw them go through at Seagram; the absolutely massive crossing arm went completely nuts when it went up. It looks to me like it made the “up” switch, so the motor turned off. But, because the arm is so long, it bounced, and forced the pivot back off the switch. So, the motor pulsed “up” again, amplifying the whip... and it got worse and worse until I heard gears stripping. Then it faulted out, with the lights stuck on.

How stuff like this wasn’t found months ago is beyond me... if I was installing that stuff it’d be the first thing I’d check once I got power on it.

Aren't there supposed to be thunderstorms in KW right now (I'm in Mississauga)? Perhaps a particularly strong blast of lightning hit the OCS and sent the train running!

Not yet, but the skies are now ominous. Very windy too.

Generally, for me, I can feel if/when a thunderstorm is coming, and I am feeling it. Probably within the next 20 minutes or so...
