ION - Waterloo Region's Light Rail Transit
I enjoyed watching the excavator crushing old sewer pipes on Caroline this morning.

There was a reference on Twitter yesterday regarding the IHT/Laurel Trail connection up Caroline currently being like a war zone. After walking it, it's not hard to imagine. Short term pain...

Yeah, I've been doing a dozen different routings to find something that feels right:

I really liked
Caroline -> FDB -> Laurel Trail or Euclid -> FDB -> Laurel Trail
but then they closed the connection from FDB to Laurel when they started the rail bridge construction. I'm not going to bike on Erb, so that pushed me back on to Caroline, which while constructiony, still feels safer.

The Charles/Ontario intersection looks to have all its underground work done, I won't be surprised if it reopens early next week.

How was it so much faster than Charles/Gaukel?

I know that the Gaukel intersection was filled with all kinds of unexpected material, which added significant delays.

Don't expect that any time soon.  William / Caroline is still gravel.

First train over the new Laurel Creek bridge went through about 30 minutes ago.

Why did they extend the closure to August 4th?? This is from the ION Website : Charles and Ontario Charles and Ontario, in Kitchener, intersection is closed until approximately August 4. - See more at: http://www.rideion.ca/traffic-updates.ht...BsV5j.dpuf

Perhaps there's some more work to conclude that isn't obvious.

There have been references in other notices to the extensive rainfall that seems to be causing delays this summer. That could be the reasoning too.

Thank you for the replies.

For train spotters: Did you get the train number, exact time and other info?

I actually got a video, and the road number of the first locomotive and last car are quite clear. Unfortunately, the train was silhouetted by the construction lights, so I’m not sure if any of the other numbers can be read. The time was around 23:50 Saturday.

You may ask how long I was hanging out in the park to take such a video. The answer is, not at all. I bicycled over when I heard the train from my house. Fortunately, it has to stop at Regina, King, and Erb/Caroline, and also goes rather slowly through the mall parking lot, so I had plenty of time to get to the bridge.

I do have to say they worked rather quickly on getting the tracks on once the culvert was in place.  On Friday morning there were still gaping holes on either side of the culvert and it seems about 40 hours later, the trains were running.

There's a decent picture of the mostly finished product over at UrbanToronto along with a few other shots along the route.
