I saw on Reddit that the 9 year old boy who was hit was apparently playing rollerblade ball hockey on the street. The other kids he was playing with cleared the street for the car who was appearently going the 30 km speed limit when the one kid shot out onto the road and into the car striking its side mirror.

This is a new level of passive voice here, at no point in any of this (very short) report does it even give a subject to the other party of the collision, literally 0 is said about it. It's barely even clear that there was another party in the collision...just "vehicle" for all this article says the cyclist could have crashed into a parked car.

Utterly atrocious.

Are you trying to say that going out biking in the country isn’t something that you should die doing? The “article” sure makes it sound like it’s a totally normal outcome and barely even news.

Local news spends its limited outrage budget on things that matter: speed cameras, free coffee at city hall, and teenagers doing teenage things.

Of course the next day I get to read how Kitcheners mayor is trying to limit speed cameras because he’s worried that fining speeders is “unjust”

I suppose it's worth considering that these cameras are in fixed geographic locations, and could be viewed as unfair just as stationing officers in particular neighbourhoods would be considered discrimination. Does anyone have a map or list of all cameras? I'm curious where they are and aren't located.

Of course, this isn't what anyone complaining about them being unfair or unjust means. They are just upset they can't drive the speed they decided is appropriate with impunity.

Actually, having fully mobile cameras that appeared at random anywhere in the cities would probably be far more effective. But "think of the children" is a very effective strategy and the only reason these cameras exist, for better or for worse.

At this point, it's pretty clear you're right, because we're seeing right now what happens when you try to expand them to places with a slightly lower density of children.

I really have no idea why politicians and media folks are so eager to pander to these angry entitled drivers who make up the terrifically vocal but presumably minority of people.
