I rarely ever see it happen to the extent that when I do see it happen, I feel a little miffed that they're blocking traffic. I've also seen a cop pull over a truck in the left-most lane before, but I don't know if that's why they were getting pulled over. I've never noticed signage to that effect, so I assume trucks are free to drive in any lane, but it's so unusual that I wonder if it's something truckers just know.
I am quite sure they are not allowed in the far left lane, when there are 3 lanes. Next time you are on the highway look at the bridges you go under. There is usually a sign above the left lane, affixed to a bridge, notifying trucks that are longer than 6.5m are not allowed. I drive pick up trucks that are CVOR and I am thinking I am not allowed in the left lane. So it may be commerical vehicles in general, but don't quote me on that one.
