Yeah, that's the key - I had to take a last minute trip to Europe last month and WOW air was ~$1400 less than the Air Canada flight. I used $250 of that for baggage and upgraded seats, and bought food / drinks in the airport. All told I saved over $1000 and had a better experience (mostly due to legroom). I'm sure if I had just paid the base fare and sat in an uncomfortable seat I would still have hated it.
Just checked: even booking that same flight 6-8 weeks out the cost difference is $1000. Would do the same thing without any reservations.
