Cambridge urban cores

I'm happy to announce that the vote for creating a large "Heritage Core District" in Galt has been voted down 6-3.

Quote:“For a heritage conservation district to be effective, it really has to be precise,” said Coun. Sheri Roberts. “When boundaries become too broad, the intent becomes diluted and instead of protecting what is truly valuable, we risk creating a blanket of regulation, as we’ve heard already, harder to administer, harder to justify and more likely to face resistance.”

Quote:Coun. Nicholas Ermeta said in his view, an HCD is not a hindrance to development at all based on what he’s seen in other cities and noted Niagara-on-the-Lake has a very large HCD and is still successful.

^ This is my favourite, as if citing the fairy tale Disneyland town with perhaps the most classist "protection" and a town that is entirely impossible to live in without inherited wealth is a "good thing" for this councillor with a planning degree.

Quote:Coun. Scott Hamilton, who also spoke against the expansion, said the existing heritage district on Main Street has not significantly improved the downtown economy.

“If HCDs were the recipe for economic success, we would have economic success with the main street of Galt, and we don’t,” Hamilton said.

“It might frighten, in a way, the exact forms of economic investment that we as a city need to increase and entice in order to create a sustainable downtown core.”
