Waterloo Region Record
By Record staff
A fire was quickly contained in the kitchen of the Empress of India restaurant at 103 King St. N. in Waterloo after it broke out in a vent hood around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Firefighters had to open up the roof to extinguish the fire.
Platoon Chief Ken Lumgair said that the cause of the fire is unknown.
"It was all properly maintained… so we don't see that as an issue," he said.
The restaurant was open and Lumgair said there were diners inside at the time, but there were no injuries as the fire was contained to the vent hood in the kitchen.
The damage is estimated at $25,000 and the restaurant has to remain closed for a few days until it is inspected by Waterloo Region Public Health.
