Revive on Erb
72 Erb St E, Waterloo

Quote:72 Erb St E was originally a Queen Anne residence with Italianate influences. Built of buff to salmon coloured brick, it was originally stained red. Its most unique architectural feature was an elliptical fieldstone and brick lintel above the front parlour window, which still stands today.

This 15-unit, multi-residential building retains most of the original Stroh house. Designed by EDGE Architects, the contemporary addition uses modern, contrasting materials such as siding, concrete, and glass, but in a neutral colour palette to complement the brick and stone of the existing house.

Couldn't find a thread on this one yet. Has been under construction for a little while, but looks like a high quality and well executed rental addition near Uptown. Looks like the units are put together well and was a reasonable preservation of the heritage structure too.

It has been discussed a bit in “General Urban Waterloo Updates and Rumours” (couldn’t find using the site’s search because it won’t accept 72 as a search term, but Google found it):

Yes, I like the way the old house (or at least its shell) is incorporated. I wish some of the original roof structure had been kept, but I don’t blame them — that top apartment would have been much harder to fit in or might not have worked at all. Even the way it has been done I think it is a much more interesting building than if it was 100% new.

Ah Googled to see any thread names but should have scoured the General Updates threads. I only recalled the ones about the council votes.

Nevertheless, agreed - and appreciate that they attempted to bring some of the same window shapes as the original through vs. it looking like a tumour of some other architectural style.
