There's at least three head shops Downtown (though I haven't checked in on their status of late), and at least one shelf of glassware in every convenience store. I do hope those stores are able to stay viable, they're long-time independent retailers which are far too rare.

Then there are the (illegal) dispensaries, which WRP has not shut down, at least not so far.

There's a huge demand for weed that is still being met by the black market. If these stores can succeed then they should be able to open wherever they want.

Looks like the Michaels on Westmount has had their lease terminated for unpaid rent. This was posted to Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/waterloo/commen...westmount/

Is their space part of the proposed development for that site?

That was my first thought. Of you go back it appears that the Michael's portion of the original mall is still there in the intial drawings

Apparently it's all settled and the store reopened. Just a power move by the landlord?

The story that I heard was that it was a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing. Apparently Micheals was paying their rent on time, but no one told the person representing the landlord who changed the locks without giving any notice to Micheals. After a week of lawyers talking in court, the dust settled.

OK, I guess as part of a large bureaucracy I should know that’s a stupid question!

There must be some additional complications at play. A landlord won't change the locks immediately when the rent is overdue, that's a last resort.
But I'm happy they have resolved the issue.

Hobby and Toy Central, currently in the Gateway Park area, will be moving to the Boardwalk as of next month.

I can't remember if it has been posted already, but Scholars Choice in the Williamburg Town Centre is closing/has closed. The London-based complany is closing all but three of its brick-and-mortar shops and will focus on on-line sales.

Looks like a Dollarama might be going into the former pier 1 by Conestoga Mall.
