Best yet!  Do you ever share your pics on SSP Canada?  This one merits wider attention, imho, although it would need a bit of explaining.

Isn't there just a blackhole where KW exists as far as that site is concerned?

I've ventured back on it a few times just to check it out and the same dog-whistling racism that led to me abandoning it is still strong as ever.

K-W building projects are very under represented in that forum.  It does stray well beyond buildings/construction projects/urban issues, not always in the most edifying ways.  I've not noticed that to be an issue in the "under construction" thread, which is what I had in mind in my previous post.

Yeah, no. I've looked around once in a while but have not been motivated enough to sign up. Feel free to post this (or any others of my photos) there, though! Smile

Not an option for me, I'm afraid (wouldn't know how).

From which WRC's predecessor was born, as I understand it.  Those origins predate my participation.  K-W is not entirely absent from SSP, but obviously most local participation is on WRC, which is fine, as it is much superior in terms of tone and local content.

Yah I'm more short browsing of that other one, I could sense the political overtones and vibes.

WRC is much more pointed, and it's specific.

Skyscraper Page starts cities off with a thread/forum, and if they take off get their own section. KW grew enough to have a section, but the moderation was largely done by non-KW people and wasn't very responsive. Eventually Andrew Hilliard started a breakaway forum called Wonderful Waterloo, and PM'd all the active KW people to go over there. The admins flipped out, censored any mention of Wonderful Waterloo, etc.

Wonderful Waterloo took off, and everyone went over there. But eventually Andrew lost interest and stopped actively managing the site. It was slowly deteriorating, but a number of people still used it. Until one day the whole site disappeared, presumably he stopped paying the hosting bill. Sadly that took a ton of content with it. However, Justin (Spokes) stepped up and created Waterloo Region Connected, and now here we are.

I made a post on SSP Canada about this project a few months ago (link) with progress photos up to that point as well as some context/explanation as to the history of the previous structure and the original plan for its redevelopment.

Didn't get any responses though, which is a bit of a pattern for KW posts on SSP I find. I've made a few other posts about KW projects linking to this forum and photos taken by members here, but pretty much zero discussion has come out of it.

Could be that KW isn't really in the sphere of most posters on there, which makes sense considering all these recent posts I'm reading about the history of the former KW SSP subforum and the migration of local users onto Wonderful Waterloo and eventually here.

I remember there being a bit of a ongoing clash between the guy who ended up creating Wonderful Waterloo and the other members of SSP in that he was a very zealous poster and booster of the region, and most non-KW members had rather poor and outdated stereotypes of the region. I think they were quite happy when he left, but the reality is that he contributed a ton of content about KW, and so when he setup Wonderful Waterloo, there wasn't really anything keeping the KW-contingent of SSP there anymore. I think this is largely true for Toronto as well - they still have members on SSP, but by and large the community is centred on UrbanToronto.

Taylor pretty much nailed the history right here.

Andrew and I created Wonderful Waterloo and some of our visions aligned, and some did not.  When I pushed a little, myself and the other site leaders were forced to step down.  I was eventually blocked from the site because of his dislike for me.  Unfortunately I saw the downfall of WW well before it actually happened but there was little I could do about it.  I'm just glad things worked out here.

Wow, all it took was five years of WRC for that (and there's certainly more) to come out.
