This is the original double-blind study (going back to 2002!) comparing two arthroscopic procedures intending to treat osteoarthritis against a placebo control group. My understanding is that this has been demonstrated in other similar studies since then.
Wow...that's pretty interesting. I am really quite shocked that such a study would be approved. Surgery, even fake surgery (as they seemed determined to limit the possible harm) still causes harm, and generally ethics boards really avoid approving studies which causes actual harm to participants.
