Potato Head GPS

1-3 p.m., Saturday, Oct 4

Shade's Mills Conservation Area, 450 Avenue Road, Cambridge

Attention all aspiring detectives: Mr. Potato Head is missing his ears, eyes, nose and mouth. It's possible to track them down, but you'll need a GPS unit to help. Go to Shade's Mills Conservation area for a GPS tutorial, and then track all of the pieces so you can put Mr. Potato Head together again.

Elora Horse and Hound Parade

12:00 p.m., Sunday, Oct 5

Downtown Elora

You know it's fall when the annual Horse and Hound Parade returns to Elora. Head over to watch hunstmen from the Eglinton & Caledon hunt club in bright red coats and barking hounds parade through. Watching the parade is free, though adults can pay for entry to the Stirrup Club (created for the day), which includes food and two drink tickets, necessary to join the Toast to the Huntsmen. All the proceeds go to the Fergus' Groves Memorial Hospital.

Bingemans Screampark

8 pm - 12 am, Saturday, Oct. 4 and Sunday, Oct. 5

I already think the song 'Hotel California' is scary enough, but now it's been turned into a terrifying, life-sized attraction called Hotel Kalifornia at Bingemen's Screampark, where the souls of the damned clutch at you with dead, cold fingers. If some outside terror is a little more your style, then creep through a terrifying forest called Devil's Rejects, if you can handle it. Saturday Morning All-You-Can-Eat-Cereal Cartoon Party

Return to the sugary Saturday morning bliss you experienced as a child (maybe not so much for your parents) at the Saturday Morning All-You-Can-Eat-Cereal Cartoon Party. Curator Kier-La-Janesse has programmed a slate of cartoon highlights and obscurities from the 60s to 80s, alongside memorable commercials and public service announcements, with plenty of sweet, sweet cereal to go along with it. Note: soy milk is available too.

Waterloo Zombie Walk

3 p.m. - 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 4

Uptown Waterloo Square,

You'll hear the cries for brains, and the shuffling of the masses of the undead across Uptown Waterloo Square this Saturday. Stroll by the Macabre Market for horrifying and amazing goods, or get your costume ready with face makeup from Kata Face Painting. There's a costume contest, so start working on your best growl and stagger. The event supports Nutrition for Learning.

Get your pancakes and sausages at the 33rd annual Oktoberfest Family Breakfast. While the event is free, donations of non-perishable food items are encouraged, to benefit the Food Bank of Waterloo Region.

Oktoberfest Barrel Races

Saturday, Oct 11, 10:00 a.m. - noon

King St., Uptown Waterloo

This Oktoberfest favourite is back for the 36th year of rolling fun. Teams of four compete to see who can roll a barrel to the finish line in the fastest time.

Oktoberfeast

Saturday, Oct. 11, 2:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 12, 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

If you're hungry from barrel racing, or just cheering on the racers, fill your tummy at Oktoberfeast, a food truck festival. Also, check out the live entertainment. Plus, this year Oktoberfeast is licensed, so you can down your fest sausage with a stein of lager.

Oktoberfest Thanksgiving parade

Monday, Oct. 13, 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Parade starts at Erb St. and King St. in Waterloo

This annual tradition, the largest Thanksgiving Day parade in Canada, is back for another year. The parade starts at Erb St. and King St. in Uptown Waterloo and ends at King St. and Madison Ave. in Kitchener. Don't forget to vote for the People's Choice float by text - each float will have a code, so look for that code and text it to 54500 to enter.

Take a trip back in time by visiting the childhood home of William Lyon Mackenzie King on Thanksgiving weekend. There will be special crafts and activities, plus Thanksgiving decorations to boot.

​Erin Fall Fair

The great part about a fall fair later in the calendar is there's a better chance you'll see a really big pumpkin. The Erin Fall Fair is taking place this weekend and along with big pumpkins, it includes a huge slate of horse shows, cattle shows, a midway, silent auction, puppet shows and much more.

​​Bells and Whistles: Meet Locomotive 6167

Saturday, Oct. 11, 11:00 a.m.

Meet at the locomotive, on Farquhar St. east of Wyndham St., Guelph

Learn more about Guelph's iconic steam Locomotive 6167, which was built in 1940, and was operated by CN Rail. The process of restoring it took years and a substantial amount of money, so the talk is a great opportunity to learn more about the train and why people wanted to preserve it.
