I can't believe we don't have a dedicated thread for brutalism yet!

In any case, a great story in the Economist about their old HQ in central London, built in the early days of brutalism.

Are you a brutalism fan too, Tom? With all the hate for the old courthouse, I thought I was the only one! It's my favourite building in the Region (well, and the Psych building at UoW).

You are not the only one. Of course there is good brutalism and bad brutalism, but done well, I do like it.

How about Robarts? One of my friends went to UoT and got me in there one time. Heaven!

University of Guelph, on the other hand, has far too many examples of bad brutalism (University Centre and Macnaughton come to mind). The Crop Science building isn't too bad, though, and MacKinnon has a couple of neat features, including a long corridor with sliding glass doors that open to make it an open air walkway (in the two or three months of the year where the climate allows). Much prefer the older building stock.

My parents both went to Guelph. They took me to see the Residence building where they met when I was very young, and I'm sure that's what sparked my interest for Brutalism.

Maybe it's "soft" Brutalism, but John Portman is one of my idols. I've stayed in one of his hotels (Hyatt Regency O'Hare) a couple of times, and his other works are on our list of "to stay at" places someday. The one in Atlanta is just out of this world.

I do desperately want to stay at the Contemporary Resort some year at Walt Disney World, too - but I always chicken out at the rates for a tower room, and settle for a visit at the cafe in the atrium, having a beer in the massive concrete atrium, with the monorail gliding silently overhead. It's heaven.

Count me as another fan when done well.

I've always admired the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird in Utah as an excellent example:

Yaaaaaas, Loooove T1 @ CDG! It's absolutely alien. And the best part? CDGVAL glides right into the side of it.

Obviously the old Courthouse on Frederick is probably the most striking example in the Region, but the Psychology building at University of Waterloo is a close second, for me. The hexagonal (I think?) central staircase is to die for.
