Suburban malls

James Fallows of The Atlantic has been writing a series about small US towns that have been struggling to revitalize. I found this snippet, from a piece on Allentown, PA, to be worth quoting.

The Hess store and many other downtown retailers were the victims of, naturally, the spread of suburban sprawl-malls. By the way, the more we travel, the more we come to regard these malls as Public Enemy No. One in the mis-shaping of late 20th century America.
