"Clarification: High frequency, not high speed"...

Yeah, it'd be pretty embarrassing to call 200km/h high speed. It could make a perfectly serviceable high frequency service though.

Well ... it's high enough if it's not crippled by countless level crossings and other issues. 150 km/h average speed would be excellent given the current baseline. That's likely not realistic, though.

Via has had a HFR site up for years, https://corpo.viarail.ca/index.php/en/projects-infrastructure/high-frequency-rail , and the government previously funded detailed studies. It sounds like this will be an announcement of funding for construction (if the Liberals win the presumed fall election of course). The Via website only proposes 177 km/h though, so if it's 200 km/h (even for a small stretch) then something has been improved.

It's still an announcement announcement at this stage but maybe we'll know once it's an actual announcement. 150km/h is peak speed right now, I've measured it. It just slows down a lot. Funding for construction pending election would be pretty good.

(NZ in particular has been doing a lot of announcement announcements but Canada does them too!)

GO's MP40PH-3C can do 180 km/h, too, which would be decent. And yet it takes a massively long time to get from Toronto to Kitchenere.

Average speed is not the headline, but it really matters way more than top speed does.

When it comes to "investments", the GofC is a master at multiple announcements.
