There are a number of isolated communities that use VIA to get to/from Thompson for supplies. That's probably why the policy is only for travel from Thompson.

According to the article it's going to be rolled out nationally, though Manitoba will probably be the focus.
There's been no news of additional service that I've seen, but word is they're buying back a dozen RDCs from Trinity Rail Express in Texas. Considering eight of them have been sitting at Mimico unrestored for years if not decades, I'm not optimistic. The move has raised the ire of Jason Shron from Rapido Trains, who wants the feds to aim a little higher.

There was a correction indicating that it is not a national policy for checking baggage.
Which is good, because requiring people to arrive an hour before a train on the corridor would be basically be a guarantee of automatic failure for any and all Via services.
I do hope Via rail service expands soon.

I know there's about half a dozen of them sitting in Mimico waiting to be restored. The rest are probably at the rebuild shop out east. I haven't heard anything about the operating funds being granted.

Ahhhhhh, so they never actually went into service? The couple of them that passed through here were just on their way to refurb (potentially)?

If they had yellow fronts they wouldn't have been refurbs. Striped, white, or silver fronts would have been. They probably sent them up to the Sudbury-White River run as soon as testing finished. You'd know if you saw the Mimico cars; they weren't even part of the last rebuild in the late 90s, and they show it.

/\ Agreed! You can take your own booze/beer on Amtrak trains, why not here? It is behaviour that should (and is) be the subject of rules and enforcement rather than taking some default position that if you're drinking it's automatically assumed you're going to behave like an asshole.
Further, if I want to sit on the beach or in a park and have a beer or bring wine for a picnic, why should that be illegal? So long as I clean up after myself, don't hassle or annoy others, or behave like a drunken oaf, then what's the problem?
