Interesting -- I do see what you're saying, and now I can't look at it the same. Not that I had anything bad to say about Landmark Place -- as it's a landmark.

Just Google'd Landmark Place. Oh common now, DTK Condos is not going to be that bad lol. Also, it was built in 1974. 46 years ago. Maybe when we look back on our skyline and even places like Toronto in 50ish years we will be like 'ew what were we thinking' ha

I don't think it is going to be as bad as landmark place after initial completion and it will probably never look that bad, but i can almost guarantee this building does not age well. People in the future will be asking what were they thinking. The fact that it is the tallest in the region will put this building under the design microscope much like landmark place. I am sorry to say, but the best thing that can happen to this building is for a taller building to be built within a decade before people really start analyzing its massing.

Apart from both buildings having a difference in the top floors (party different design for DTK, I think only different colour cladding for Landmark Place) I really don't see the similarity.
Not every building will be an architectural award winner; they are built by private companies and our zoning doesn't mandate a city architectural review (nor should it). I personally think this looks just fine, not amazing but fine, like most of the new construction in DTK. We'll get a few super nice buildings over time, some meh, and a lot of decent ones. But as long as we can avoid the calamity that is King St N (between University and Columbia) I'll be happy.

I personally don't find the change of form for the top four floors to be ridiculous, or even objectionable. But then beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
