RE: Brick Brewing Co. - gomesjustin - 08-18-2015

I've heard twice now from two sources (one in construction and one who works across the street) that there is plans for a condo building for the former Brick Brewing building on King St. Anyone else heard anything yet / see a render?

RE: Brick Brewing Co. - schooner77 - 08-18-2015

I haven't seen a render, but I've read and there is a fair amount of consensus that it will be a condo with commercial units on the first floor or two. I've also heard that there will be a restaurant on the ground floor. The building is to top out somewhere between 20-25 stories.

There is some discussion on that proposed project here:

Interesting article in the Waterloo Chronicle on the future development of the property on King St.. A tech hub for startups with short-term leases. And, if I read the article correctly, there could be tenants as early as November. I thought this property was due to be a 21 plus story condo/retail space.

Sounds like the tech companies will be going in the old building only. There's plenty of room to add new development at the back of the site.

Perhaps, but that certainly limits parking, and it's hard to sell work space without some availability. As well, you can only go down so far with underground parking in that area, I would suspect that would pose some limitations.

I'll be really disappointed if this isn't developed into something bigger.

I couldn't agree more Spokes.  Another 'tech space' building is not exciting me..... yawn.

It excites me in that employment is a good thing, but if thats all it is, I agree, yawn.

The Record article on "Distillery Labs" has these important tidbits:

http://m.therecord.com/news-story/5942895-former-brick-brewery-greenhouse-for-growing-startups-

Hip's plan to redevelop the property at 181 King St. S. is on hold, while it completes other projects. So it was happy to lease the 12,000-square-foot former brewery to Distillery Labs.

Hillis says the deal between Distillery Labs and Hip gives his team enough time to prove out its business model and confirm their greenhouse approach.

"It gives us some time to figure out where the next iteration of this product will be," he says.
