General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours
Is Schreiters closing or moving?

But 20% less space, and surely no cheaper, so I don't think that particular move would make any sense for Schreiter's.

There is a "Leased" sign in the window of the former Casablanca used bookstore in the Weber Chambers building. Anybody have any intel on who's planning to move in to this space, which iirc, was 3,000 sq ft? Not much seems to have happened with this renovation project, including the upstairs apartments, since the Mayfair demolition last year.

I've heard talk of an Italian style place being opened by the PartyTown group, this could be a spot for them?

No idea, but I'm reminded that the new liquour licence for the former Caesaria space was for a pub with an Italian name.

Smile Tiger Coffee Roasters on Ahrens St is applying for a liquor licence. A nice after-work spot near the Breithaupt Block?

Do they have a shop/café in the building? The name is new to me.

I thought it was just catering. It hasn't been around long. If they're going to have a licensed café, that's very cool and a nice development (slightly) westward on Weber.

Edit: Sorry, Ahrens, not Weber.

Smile Tiger is the owned by the same people who own DVLB Espresso and Whiskey in uptown Waterloo.

This will be their main roasting location.

Smile Tiger Coffee is also served at Google and a number of other locations

Theme will be different than DVLB here with more of a Scandinavian look.

Plans are for a licensed patio out back too.

Opening is set for sometime in the Spring.

By the way, is the Opus II Music store still in the Ahrens St building?

What a difference a bit of upkeep makes. This property had always been quite a bit of a blight driving past GRH towards Waterloo. They replaced the awning and gave it a coat of paint and it's almost unrecognizable:

Sometimes it only takes a little bit of maintenance to really freshen a place up.

I drove past the Coptic Church this afternoon and was struck by the size of that addition. The community must be booming!

Yes, I believe the music shop is still there - just in the back area of the main floor.  Smile Tiger will be the front of the main floor.
