We'll see how well they stand up to the salt. After the plows a big pile of salty slush will end up PILED around the base to leach in all year. I like trees, but salt kills trees.
In warmer climates this design has merit, think: Hollywood palm trees, narrow trunk, no leaves (no salt, no snow, no plows etc.)
Beating a dead horse - a bike lane that nobody will use in the winter is going to be hard to define and drivers are going to interpret a second lane.
