Kitchener to fill Ward 10 seat with 2022 election runner-up

Kitchener city councillors have decided not to hold a byelection to fill the vacant Ward 10 seat previously held by Aislinn Clancy. Instead, the runner up in 2022 municipal election, Stephanie Stretch, will be appointed to the position, pending confirmation by the city clerk that she is qualified and still wants the job.

Stephanie Stretch 'delighted' to be appointed to Kitchener city council. "I am fully committed to this role, and look forward to serving Ward 10 residents and the people of Kitchener with my full attention," Stretch said.

Nothing says democracy like giving up on democracy and just handing people positions of power lmfao.

She was the runner-up, on a very similar platform. I think it's a reasonable choice.

The "democracy is too expensive" argument always falls a bit flat to me - and yet turnout is still barely 20% anyways.

And that's voter turnout when it's generally still relatively warm outside. I imagine voter turnout falls through the floor if you try to hold a byelection in mid-February for something that people might not think is worth their time. In which case you might be electing the same person as would have been appointed, with fewer overall votes than they received as the runner-up in the original election. Don't get me wrong, I am totally biased because I'm happy with that decision, and I'd feel very differently if the runner-up was someone with dramatically different political goals, but I'm sure the city has the numbers for likely voter turnouts in various situations and kept that in mind when deciding.

It's hard enough getting turnout when you're electing multiple types of councillor, a mayor, a chair, and trustees; for a single councillor, it's hard to make it seem worth the effort.

Oh FFS.

I mean, this is pathetic. The plastic bags aren't even a culture war thing (plastic is)...they're just pretending they are to gain points. God DAMN tory voters are gullible.

Let’s hope we’re near the peak. There is no guarantee we aren’t at the beginning of a further upswing of insanity.

With an election scheduled for mid-2026, 2025 will be a year of opportunity ...

A comment on the thread suggests that this is to benefit Atlantic Packaging which, according to the poster, has links to the PC party.
