Toronto's bid includes Waterloo Region

Quote:The city's bid includes the cities of Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton, the regional municipalities of Durham, York and Halton, and partnerships with Waterloo Region and Guelph.

Amazon's CEO, Jeff Bezos, does not get along with that stable genius, Trump.  So, if he wanted to stick it to Trump, Toronto will be chosen.  But the probable backlash may not be worth it for Amazon.

And there's this from the New York Times:

Quote:Toronto’s second asset, he said, is its publicly funded university and college system. The University of Waterloo has long been recognized as one of North America’s top technology schools, and the University of Toronto is a major center for research in artificial intelligence. As part of the area’s Amazon pitch, the province of Ontario has increased funding for artificial intelligence programs at its universities by 30 million Canadian dollars, or about $24 million.

Considering what Amazon is worth, I expect they could weather anything thrown at them.

To borrow a theme from another thread, it looks like the Waterloo economic development corporation decided on 'Waterloo' and not 'Waterloo Region' or 'Kitchener' etc. for its branding campaign.

Waterloo brand pitched to global businesses instead of Region of Waterloo

I didn't see it in the video, but their website has the full branding including logo.

I am an advocate of the simplicity of just "Waterloo". No one outside the region gives a fig about the nuances of our cities and townships, and any promotion benefits us all.

There's something a bit funny about Linamar being such a focus, in that my previous employer did huge amounts of work to create the advanced manufacturing systems for them, so while Linamar bought and utilized them, and gave us a bunch of parts and what the finished assembly of those parts should be, it was my former employer (and myself in certain jobs) who actually conceptualized, developed, and created the advanced manufacturing. Also a bit awkward in my mind because Guelph was always the part of HSR that I would have been inclined to skip, since they had the smallest population, the worst transit network connections, and the most inflexible and inconveniencing part of the route.

I guess BWXT is the new identity of Babcock & Wilcox (who have been working on nuclear projects for ages).
