Toronto transit projects

Looks like folks in York Region are waking up to the benefits of LRT: the 407 Transitway project, earmarked for BRT at least at first, is under pressure to be made LRT from the get-go.

Good luck moving up Metrolinx's priority list, though.

Is it Metrolinx priority list, not the provincial government?  The tentative plan is for BRT only, and not until 20 years from now.  Not exactly aggressive transit planning.

An interesting snippet from the article:

In that piece it references 2 minute headways for buses. If that's the *starting* point for the system, it would be an amazing leap to expect it to work, let alone grow. Even fully dedicated ROW.

How would that make any sense?  Are they anticipating that the HSR might run through Peterborough to Ottawa rather than along the existing corridor?

Alignment is not optimal to be sure ... but you could possibly do it without anu level crossings!

It's great for everyone except people in downtown Toronto. I remember on SSP it was mentioned that at the speeds desired there would be no significant travel time difference if the line was routed through Ottawa instead of running directly to Montreal.

I would hope that Kitchener and Waterloo Region would fight like hell to ensure that HSR passes through downtown Toronto.

They're separate projects (indulging the fantasy that either will ever amount to more than mumblings around election time). VIA is interested in Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal, the province is interested in Toronto-KW-London(-Windsor).

There is speculation that VIA is considering reviving an abandoned line of the former Ontario and Quebec Railway between Havelock (east of Peterborough) and Perth (west of Smiths Falls) in order to bypass the lakeshore freight corridor. VIA already owns the active line from Smiths Falls to Richmond (west Ottawa suburb).

Today, the Toronto Transit Commission officially opened the Leslie Barns facility, on the East side of Toronto.  This new, massive maintenance and storage facility will serve as a new home for the large order of Bombardier FLEXITY Outlook LFLRV's that the city is currently procuring.  As part of Doors Open Toronto, I couldn't wait to get inside and have a look around.  Here are some photos.

Someone in the Toronto office today asked where Bessarion station was, and one of the quicker wits replied "Maybe you need to find the Bessarion in yourself, first"

When I lived in the area, I always thought Bessarion was a misplaced station. A gas station, convenience store, and empty lots surrounded it. There were very few pedestrians in the area too.

Two subway announcements in as many days!

Yesterday, the provincial Transport Minister announced $150 million in planning money to fully draw up the Relief Line and make it 'shovel-ready'.

Today, a similar $83 million was pledged to plans for the north extension of the Yonge line (up to the 407 in Richmond Hill).
