I've biked through there twice, now - they've done a nice job at the "left" end with all the new stuff, and the "right" side is all original abandoned Ontario Place buildings - which makes me sad (to see them abandoned) but I love going through there and the fact that they're still standing.

A few reasons:

- Inflation
- Wider road to be rebuilt the entire route
- Full route is on the same road, all a major thoroughfare for this part of town (we had large portions off-road)
- Full route is relatively dense, meaning more utilities and larger utilities to replace
- Finch West station portal is underground
- Toronto means things cost more regardless of what

While it is strange to include the 30 year operations budget, they appear to have done so for the Finch Line announcement as well, which may have led to the original 4.8x cost estimate, I'm not sure.

However, the routes are different length, with Finch being 11 km to our 19 km.  

By my math Finch is working out to 2.3x the per mile cost of our LRT.  timio lays out some pretty reasonable explanations for why.  Timio's explanations show why it's really quite hard to compare costs between systems.

The Finch line's western end, at Humber College, will also be underground. So that's two tunnel portals.

I believe the ION is “costing” $880M. The $1.9G figure is, to my knowledge, the Grandlinq contract value, which includes some but not all of the $880M. It excludes money for the vehicles, not to mention property acquisition and I think some other smaller costs. Normally the “cost” of something does not include a certain number of years of its operating expenses. If we were talking about a house there would be no question that the “cost” is the purchase price, not purchase price plus several years worth of taxes and utilities.

The new total is $868 million and that includes the cost of the vehicles, land acquisition, utility relocation. If you take even some of those expenses out you realize how inexpensive the actual construction portion of the project actually is, especially relative to other North American projects.

Also of note, they have only spent 3/4 of the land acquisition budget and have paid for about 1/2 of the vehicles so far (as of 31-Oct-2017).

Thanks for the up-to-date numbers. Re: land acquisition, at this point I’m guessing that it’s mostly that they ended up spending less than originally thought? It seems there can’t be much if any more land acquisition to complete.

I factored in the length. I calculated it by using .87bn for our line, the 2.5bn quoted for Finch, and the fact that ours is 19 km and theirs is 11 km. So that's 4.8x, simple math.

But I was wrong, as ijmorlan pointed out in the ion thread, since their 2.5bn figure includes ops. Their construction cost is 1.2bn. But that's still like 2x the cost per kilometre of ours.
