General Road and Highway Discussion
I don’t know the history of Glasgow at all- was it ever a free-flowing arterial? It is a convenient route for many people, but not configured like an arterial- what was its configuration before the bike lanes and traffic calming?

I don’t use Glasgow too often, but happened to yesterday and was admiring the street. It’s a great bicycling street. The trees are beautiful. The bike lanes and 40km/h speed limit are great. And I don’t think it suffers many slowdowns on account of all that, in my limited experience of it. Just because it's straight doesn't mean it's a major arterial.

It's 40km/h in the school zone- between Krug and Chapel or so. Are there really many lawn signs? I used to work in the neighbourhood and remember two, right by the school, which just pointed out that the speed limit is ’40.’ If there are new ones, what’s nasty about them?

I remember from the presentation the local folks did to council before there was any traffic calming the majority of drivers didn't obey the limit of 40. The lanes were pretty wide and it was easy to pick up speed coming down the hill when travelling east. It's not really the same situation on Lancaster where the road design keep most people from going 80 but houses on Glasgow are set far back from the street and I have no idea what kind of pedestrian traffic the street sees. When I was riding down it some people that live on Glasgow put their garbage cans in the bike lane (they were still full). I didn't have a camera with me so I didn't snap pictures but I thought the way the bike lanes interact with the traffic calming was kind of weird. If I remember I will take some pictures.

Nothing nasty about the signs that were on Lancaster. Just some that said "Please drive like you live here" and "Kids play here" type stuff.

Hmm, maybe I'm particularly sensitive to specific wording, but it always left me with a very sour taste in my mouth when driving by those signs. They weren't particularly friendly and were hostile toward motorists.

That would be reading too much into them, especially since those putting up such signs are probably also motorists.  I must confess, however, that when I pass them, a little voice somewhere in my deepest, darkest recesses wants to say "keep you eff'in kids out of the street!".  One keeps in mind as well, however, that a child was once struck and killed somewhere along that particular stretch.

Queen St S, from Charles to Courtland is about to get a second coat of asphalt, which has been pending since the reconstruction in 2013. They've been raising all of the utility ports on the road, and fixing some concrete sections the past few days.

I noticed that on the weekend - I hadn't realized that so much "construction work" was required to prep up for the finishing coat.  To the point of removing sections of the curb by the storm sewer grates.

They did the second coat of asphalt a few nights ago on Queen St S.  It was the middle of the night, right outside my window, and so I didn't get any sleep. I joined some of my neighbours, and we stayed up watching the show until 4am.

I see this every day. In fact you are at the corner of my street. The job seems to be moving fairly quickly, likely the original build in 2000 had all the underground service and catchments in place for future expansion.
