The galt Arena.
But even if they had to tear it down and start over, they would have the land to do it if it was anywhere else. Depending on the work it may be a matter of just replacing all the refridgeration equipment and not really touching the structure or slab in a significant way. there would also be the option of repurposing the ice rinks into a gym space. Dickson arena was repurposed and continues to be a public space.

It's hard not to see this as "If you don't like it, you can do without."
Quote:Multiplex project could be cancelled if council wants: staff The joint project in the second bullet point involves two schools, the athletic facility, and a library (I refuse to use the name "Idea Exchange") in east Galt. I can see this getting a lot of blowback since it will result in Galt having an eventual four library branches while Preston and Hespeler have to make do with one (and Preston's has been the same size since I moved here in the 80s).

They would probably skip the library now that they built the other one and just let the school's handle it. If the idea was that the library would pay for some of the cost, the city funds the library so it's not really making it cheaper for the city. They should really build it where space allows it on city owned land otherwise after 40 years the city has no arena and no land.
Here's a new twist.
Mayor introduces idea of multiplex at Cambridge Centre mall https://www.therecord.com/news-story/756...ntre-mall/ Quote:What if the multiplex was at the Cambridge Centre mall?

Not much else they can use that building for. Seems a decent use - and they can expand onto the lots out back if they need to. Maybe (*gasp*) put a parking structure in.

And maybe somewhere in that vicinity Cambridge could grow itself a new central town centre, next to LRT.

they could use their operations yard just down the road

Mall does seem like a decent fit, it’s got two empty anchor stores. Usually when a mall gets to that point it’s nearing its end.

And Sears has a sea of surface parking around it begging to be repurposed, too. I think this is a great fit.

From dying mall to dying mall in 22 years.

Do they have real planners in Cambridge or do they just throw stuff up and see what sticks because politicians are interfering? (serious question) Hespeler Road is a disaster of 25+ years of no planning ... sorry "hodge podge planning" with no plan for the future except hope for an LRT which they apparently don't really want or do want but not a well thought out plan. Three levels of government have been a disaster in Cambridge under Craig and nothing has helped Hespeler Road since/before/today following the Region's creation. Malls are dead unless they are regional malls or super-malls and Cambridge missed the funeral.

The London Public Library system seems to have a history of putting library branches in malls. If we expect outdoor urban spaces to be a mixture of public and private services, there is nothing to say that malls can't do the same. Maybe 20 years from now, this multi-sports complex will be seen as a catalyst for change in the area.

The way things are going there won't be much mall left - one anchor tenant, a movie theatre, and the food court. They could easily rebuild some of the retail sections to be multi-storey with mixed use above. The Zellers and sears sections could come down and be turned into the multiplex, with a section spanning the space between them.

This is where I would love to see it... as an addition to the front of the mall, fronting onto Hespeler with a great streetscape and pedestrian realm. Maybe surrounded by higher density, mixed use redevelopment of the parking lots.
