Waterloo Region – The Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) announced the finalists for its 2014 Brownie Awards recently, and four projects in Waterloo Region are on the list.
The Brownie Awards recognize leadership, innovation and environmental sustainability in brownfields redevelopment across Canada. A jury reviews all of the projects that are submitted and selects finalists in each category. This year, the following projects are in the running:
• Legislation, Policy and Program Initiatives Category:
Region of Waterloo Brownfields Financial Incentive Program

• Financing, Risk Management and Partnerships Category:
ION Rapid Transit – Stimulating Community Regeneration

• Excellence in Project Development – Building Scale Category:
The Breithaupt Block

• Excellence in Project Development – Neighbourhood Scale Category:
Victoria Common

“We are pleased to be recognized on this short list of Canada-wide submissions,” said Rob Horne, the Region’s Commissioner of Planning, Housing and Community Services. “We are enjoying remarkable success in building our community and rehabilitating contaminated properties is a big part of that success.”
The winners of the 2014 Brownie Awards will be announced Oct. 28, 2014, at the 2014 CUI Brownfields Conference in Toronto.

It's amazing the number of architectural awards this region is starting to collect. We still have a long ways to go before we are an architectural destination, but I like the way things are moving.

It's pretty cool that even years after starting, the Tannery is still winning awards.
