Waterloo did that on Albert Street. They're not really beautiful, and they do get beaten up by snowplows. I think they're my least favourite of the options.
They're definitely my favourite option, our streets need more greenery and they also provide the most space...but we really do need a) a winter solution, and b) the willingness to narrow our roads to prevent speeding. b) is related only in drivers going to fast and taking out planters.
In other news, the island on Victoria is completed (or nearly so)...it exceeds my extremely low expectations. Has hard curbs and is slightly (SLIGHTLY) wider than I expected...still well below acceptable width (and length for that matter) (and of course the curb cuts are still poor, and the mis-alignment is ridiculous).
