Cycling in Waterloo Region

You might be surprised to discover that the majority of your actions are unconscious.  You might not think you would pass an unhelmeted cyclist more carefully, but you probably would...or at least, most people would because they don't think that much about it.

The same is true for unconscious racial bias, for unconscious gender bias, and so many others.  In fact, the best way to change our unconscious behaviour is to understand that it *can* occur, and that we aren't necessarily immune to it.

In fact, I'll point out you say you'll never feel safer not wearing it, do you feel unsafe not wearing it?  Naked even?  That's how I feel, and I am quite sure that that feeling of unease probably makes me more cautious...whether that makes me safer, well, I doubt it, but it still changes my behaviour no matter how much I don't want it too.  You might find that an objective evaluation would show you act differently as well.

As for your choice to wear a helmet, all the power too you, I also choose to wear a helmet most of the time, further nobody here is suggesting that you be banned from wearing a helmet, or in any way derided for it, or even that you shouldn't.  Only that a law forcing you to wear one is clearly a bad thing, and that safety campaigns oriented around wearing helmets are also counter productive.

What is the plan for snow clearing in the new bike lanes in Uptown?

Ha! I noticed the same thing as I was biking through Uptown today.

I made the bike counter get to 2 just now... there aren't really usable bike lanes in Uptown at the moment (or even more so than usual). Spur Line and Laurel Trail are OK, but Central Promenade isn't.

I am sure that the counter data will somehow be used against building further actual-protected lanes (i.e. "look no one uses it, why build more!?").

I went to run errands at lunch on my bike and had to use vehicle lanes on King.

The number of vehicles parked in the cycling lane was also much higher today as the slight bump of the roll curb blends in to the lumps of snow and it visually disappears.
Everyone move to the back of the bus and we all get home faster.

I was just re-reading the MINIMUM MAINTENANCE STANDARDS FOR MUNICIPAL HIGHWAYS and realizing that for cycling lanes most of our on-road facilities will fall in to the class 3 standard (only need reduce depth to 8cm within 24 hours), and this was the new revelation for me, if the municipality declares a snow event then no matter the depth of snow in the cycling lane they are deemed to be in compliance until the snow event is declared over.

So basically, as soon as there is enough snow to warrant the clearing of the bike lane that will also likely enough to trigger a snow event and no longer require the lane to be cleared.

If the uptown cycling lanes aren't going to be cleared all winter I think there is a requirement that they have to be signed as officially closed (if it is closed they are in compliance).
