I’m not sure, but thinking about it a bit, I think the important fact (which the City seems to have forgotten) is that these lanes are supposed to be segregated. So, I would say that anything that needs to be roadside needs to be between the bicycle lanes and the motor vehicle lanes. So probably there should be spaces where the lanes diverge, and designated trash locations on this islands.
Going back to Toronto, this would probably have been a better solution there too, although their lanes aren’t really segregated and appear to have been added to existing pavement so it’s not quite the same situation. I should also add that I’m assuming the destroyed pylons are due to something besides the garbage trucks — if the garbage trucks are actually breaking the pylons then either the garbage trucks are being operated wrong or the pylons are incorrectly chosen. Either way, it would be the City’s problem to fix.
