Most elevators don't have a chime, but most have sensors in the doors that will reopen them if something obstructs them during the close cycle unless it's an extremely old elevator. Next time an elevator door is closing, wave your hand out and it'll reopen.

Most elevators don't have a chime because most elevators are >15 years old. New or refurbished elevators all must include a chime.
