Plot twist: the tracks were abandoned, no longer part of the active network, and obviously so (I think there were only 100m or so of track still there, with no connection at all to active tracks, and no engines or cars on the isolated piece of track). So, as I’ve been trying to explain for months now, everything has a context. Safety isn’t just a matter of blindly following rules. Obviously, “don’t mess with switches” is a good rule, but even it has exceptions.
