The economics of the lifestyle you want also require a whole bunch of subsidies. Our whole society relies on subsidies. That's not enough to make something not worth doing.
But aside from that, my point is that it's not inherent that they don't 'pay the costs'. So focus on those costs and make arguments for shifting the burdens. And avoid the blanket statements.
