Your assumption, IIRC, is correct. I remember reading about it, but I can't remember where I read it. But it had something to do with the German population, or more correctly, the German population that came from Pennsylvania, weren't exactly flush with cash, if you know what I mean. So certain brick, and in this case, the yellow, was less expensive than the red. Many places were double bricked back then, as the air in between layers of brick was considered the insulation. So it could have been very well that the yellow brick was only interior to save on money.
