Amtrak Cascades Accident
#1
Terrible accident in the US today with an Amtrak Cascades set coming off the rails on a bridge. These are Spanish-built Talgo sets, which have a single, shared axle between coaches and a very low CoG.

Sad, seemed like it was on new track too.

This website in the news article that sourced the speed information is pretty neat: transitdocs.com

It's the Paris-Strasbourg LGV crash or Spanish Talgo accident all over again - the train was doing 81 mph in a 30 mph curve. Sad

How did this manage to happen first day? Would the drivers not have rigorously analyzed this new route to know its limitations, and been sure to apply that on a day that the media would be closely watching? It's so unexpected.

It's interesting that the website includes VIA trains but not GO trains.  I wonder why?

The Canadian is not doing well: Train 1 is 10 hours late; Train 2 is 8 hours late.

That's fairly standard for the Canadian. You're not really taking it if you're in a rush to arrive at your destination, in most cases. I do highly recommend it though.

Yeah, ours was about that late most of the journey. If it is more than 4 hours late into Vancouver, you get a refund or something - ours sped up in the last few hours and we were “only” 3 hours and 50-something minutes late.

At one point we woke up in the middle of the night and were going backwards. Apparently a blockage on the track meant we had to reverse for several hours.

A fascinating experience - definitely recommend getting a cabin. The whole back of the train is yours and it’s actually really luxurious. Food is excellent.
