Anybody know how old that building is? It has some stylistic elements of older buildings in the area but is clearly much newer. It always seems odd when a newer building is demolished but if the new construction needs the space I can see how it would make sense.

It dates to 2008.  Replaced the previous building that had been damaged by fire.  It is odd to see such a new structure demolished, although I'm glad of the development.

2007. The other two buildings could not be demolished so this one clearly had to be torn down in order to build the new building (with higher density).

The demolition of 242 was completed a few months ago. This week has seen new action, with crews clearing the site of trees and signage etc, presumable in preparation for the start of excavation.

The excavation is now under way!

Oh, nice. I was not paying much attention to this project. I had no idea it was actually getting constructed...for some I kind of assumed it was still a proposal. It seems like it'll be a nice mid rise building.

They leveled out the ground a couple days ago. Lots of noise for all the surrounding high-rise neighbours but I'm happy to see this going ahead.

I was going to say that it looked familiar. You on the 7th floor? Gotta love the elevator in that place. And when it's out of order and you gotta take the stairs...

Oh wait...edit note..that would have been for the other poster...

The elevator was actually replaced a few years ago, and lobby area remodeled. I don't think heritage designations apply to anything inside the building... it's too bad the "authentic" elevator experience is no more!

When was it replaced? I used to go in there to see relatives up until mid-2016.

Also sucks that they disconnected all the original electric ‘fireplaces’.
