Multiplex project could be cancelled if council wants: staff

Council can choose to just cancel the entire multiplex project and start all over again. It's one of four options city staff put forward in the latest report about the controversial plan to build an all-in-one recreational facility for Cambridge.

Politicians will have all summer to think long and hard about what they want to do before they are expected to make a decision at a meeting in October...

•Move ahead with the Conestoga College site. Council deferred a decision on a land lease with the college while it considered other sites.
•Build a pool and gym in collaboration with both schools boards and the Idea Exchange on city-owned land in east Galt. Ice rinks could be built elsewhere through a partnership.
•Pick one of the four other shortlisted locations for the multiplex.
•Cancel the entire project and start over with an updated assessment of facility needs. The city's last assessment was done in 2015 in preparation for the multiplex.

The joint project in the second bullet point involves two schools, the athletic facility, and a library (I refuse to use the name "Idea Exchange") in east Galt. I can see this getting a lot of blowback since it will result in Galt having an eventual four library branches while Preston and Hespeler have to make do with one (and Preston's has been the same size since I moved here in the 80s).

They would probably skip the library now that they built the other one and just let the school's handle it. If the idea was that the library would pay for some of the cost, the city funds the library so it's not really making it cheaper for the city.

They should really build it where space allows it on city owned land otherwise after 40 years the city has no arena and no land.
