You're in luck because word on the street is there will be a bar AND a pub opening in Belmont Village. From what I've heard, I think one is to be located in the former Canada Trust building.

Especially with all of the new residential being built as of late.
A small microbrewery/brewpub would be amazing here.

That is great news. What is even more funny is that I was thinking that the now vacant TD building would be a perfect spot!

Definitely. A casual bar is something that Belmont is missing. If they can get lunch traffic from Sunlife and GRH, and evening visitors from the surrounding neighbourhoods, I bet it would be a great success.

I noticed a new place as I was walking to my office today. I noticed the sign said: Grand Trunk Saloon. I found more info here: http://www.grandtrunksaloon.com/
Looks good - has anyone tried it yet? This is the cool after-work drinks kind of place downtown kitchener needs.

Is that the former Marisol space? What happened to the plan for a pizza place? In any event looks like a good new addition.

They announced new plans for the space a couple weeks ago.

I'd guess the Berlin guys are little busy with their venture and it wouldn't make sense to spread themselves too thin at this point.

From the article:
Quote:GTS is the brainchild of Darryl Haus, owner and operator of Hogtails BBQ in west Waterloo, and local businessman and Fo’Cheezy food-truck entrepreneur Manish Patel.
That's a great pairing!

Looks very promising ...
Quote:Indeed, the idea of a western saloon lends itself to the casual concept. Having evolved in the early 1800s, the American saloon served trappers, prospectors and cowboys, focusing on beer and spirits with food only a secondary concern.
This is basically the western equivalent of the izakaya. I hope I'll be able to check it out soon. Walking distance to (my) home is a big plus for a drinking establishment!

I went to the opening today, and it looks like a nice little bakery (along with the other services offered). Lots of vegan and gluten-free options if you're into that, but in spite of the adjectives the prices seemed reasonable. The items we tried were delicious.
The owner tells us that for the time being they will have complimentary coffee since their zoning doesn't allow for selling coffee...lovely. But, hey, if it's not quite a coffee shop it's another place to grab some baked treats in Midtown...awesome!

Wow. I knew zoning was absurdly specific but this pretty much takes the coffee cake. Up to now my canonical example was simply the fact that the zoning bylaw mentions “picture framing” as distinct from any other retail business. As if it is anybody’s business but mine and my customers whether picture framing is offered as a service at my otherwise legal retail establishment.

This is one of mu biggest beefs with city council. One minute they are not afraid to regulate whether a establishment can serve coffee or not, the next they let disasters go through because they couldn't possibly tell a developer to hire a better architect. There is simply no pattern to their governing, and frankly the results leave much to be desired.

Interesting article in The Record about how "techies and foodies" are bringing more restaurants to downtown Kitchener: http://www.therecord.com/news-story/6265...ant-scene/
Also mentions Indian restaurant Amaya Express going into the old Niko Niko space, I was by there today and the signage is already up.

Good stuff. I've also noticed that Hamilton seems to be getting more good restaurants. Maybe there are just more good restaurants than there used to be. (In particular, I had lunch at the Saltlick Smokehouse in Hamilton the other day and noticed that they were carrying cans of Abe Erb!)

Not sure if previously discussed but a new juice bar called Goodvibes has opened Downtown.
