It's an unusual contrast between the "ye olde" street lamps and the space age tree stands.

Once the contractor has finished the work, the City of Waterloo will install programmable light standards that fit around trees along the sidewalks.
Once complete, there will be 17,000 individual programmable lights that can change colours to create different effects on the street. The underground infrastructure has been installed already, but the light standards will be custom-built for the project. Installation is scheduled for later this summer.

Funny that on May 16 they said the uptown streetscape would be done in 8 weeks and here we are 19 weeks later and they still aren't done.

I have asked about when the bike parking is to be installed in Uptown. Current plans are installation during the first week of October (next week) after the light fixtures (the fancy ones we've just talked about) are done.

I only saw reference to the request for zoning by-law amendment. Haven't seen any renderings. The Credit Union lands include a large parking lot on Kuntz Lane, which is directly behind 10 and 12 George St. The parking lot is part of the proposal.

I saw these at night last night - pretty tacky IMO. No pics.
They change colour often - going from purple to blue to combinations of red, orange and yellow, etc.
Gives Waterloo sort of a cheap casino town feel - maybe that's the look the City was going for.
Not my final judgment though - I may change my mind after I get used to seeing them.
