The former Ish & Chips is also having some works done.
I'm going to pessimisticly guess that it will be paved over for parking.

That retaining wall makes me think you're right.

That was my thinking.

I did some looking into things, back when it burned down, and apparently if the site is redeveloped within a couple years of the fire, then it can still qualify for a grandfathered parking requirement. Namely, that any square footage existing prior to ~1970 is exempt from parking reqs. If the lot is not redeveloped within that time, it will revert to modern standards (i.e. Where the HSBC was required to have ~10 spots.
I can't recall the exact length of time, but it was a low number of years.

I don't understand how the City of waterloo would potentially allow it to be a parking lot. It's King street!!

Has anyone checked building permits? Who owns the property now? The wall could simply be a way to make sure that the dirt on the Post Office side doesn't shift onto the former Ish & Chips side.

Earlier this month David's Gourmet opened an "Express" location above The Works in Uptown Waterloo (92 King St South). Looks like it's focused on the lunch crowd, with salads, sandwiches, and a smoothie bar. They have a vertical sign up that's really easy to miss from the street (I must have walked by it a few times and never even noticed).

Site was being paved over today and looking more and more like a parking lot.

Did the mysterious parcel of land north of erb the city bought for $2 million back in January ever get revealed? Maybe this is it.

More parking in uptown? Greaaaaat...

RE: General Urban Waterloo Updates and Rumours - DHLawrence - 10-23-2014

Can't stay that way forever; the land will be worth too much.

That Ish and Chips parking lot would be a fantastic place for a food truck "pod" - throw in a few tables and umbrellas and you've got a sheltered space for a couple of trucks. It would be better than the spot at King & Bridgeport that food trucks have been using in Uptown. I also saw on Twitter that Carls' Jr has been scaring away food trucks parked on Willis Way so they may need a new place next year.
