Quote:Famed Canadian chef Jonathan Gushue is planning to open a new restaurant in downtown Kitchener, according to a staff report to Kitchener council.

The report to council is a review of a liquor licence application, filed for a restaurant called The Berlin. Kitchener staff confirmed to CBC that the application was filed by former Langdon Hall executive chef Jonathan Gushue, for what is believed to be his first independent restaurant.

The Berlin is slated to open at 41 King St. W., formally The Ren at 41, the report said.

The restaurant will have a capacity of 200 people and be open for meals Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to the brief.

I will be glad to see that space being put to good use. Love the name of the restaurant as well the hours.

Very excited to see this happen. That's such a nice space in there.

Fantastic!

Anyone know when this might open?

I think it may be some time yet.  I'm told that Gushue wants to redecorate before opening.

Opening soon?  Decals were being placed on the windows today.

Soon, I hope, but I'm not sure - they seem to be doing a much more extensive renovation of the space than I would have expected.

Two restaurants for Gushue...

Quote:The Berlin will focus on "modern European" food, including German, Austrian, Polish and Hungarian fare — think spaetzle, perogies, dumplings and steaks — cooked over a wood-fired hearth, [Gushue] said...

The menu at The Berlin will make a nod to Waterloo Region's Germanic heritage, although it will be ever-changing and have a broad range of influences, including Japanese cooking techniques.

"The area has a lot of central European roots. That's great food that really very few people explore," Gushue said. "It speaks to this region, and the kind of food we both love. The food is not showy, it's approachable, and it's very straightforward."

About bloody time (he says fondly remembering The Ratskeller et al restaurants.)

Two restaurants.  Wow.  Definitely bullish on downtown.

RE: The Berlin - REnerd - 10-04-2015

Definitely a bold move - but excellent news as Downtown is desperate right now.

If this happens there will actually be a bit of a nice destination node there - Graffiti, Berlin, TWH Social, Darlise and the Bruce.  That is a hell of a start and will hopefully get people excited!

I would have said less "desperate" than it has been for years.

Tiles were being removed from the outside of Berlin as of this morning. More progress, but it seems like a lot of work remains if they want to open by the end of this month.
