That interchange is going to be so awesome. Can't wait to watch it come together!

Looking forward to the photos! Big Grin

There's construction equipment on site at the apartments that are to be torn down for the expanded right of way of Highway 7 south of Frederick St. You can see them from the highway. (The ones here)

Also the plaza that used to house Kitchener Glass, Baka and Jiffy Lube is boarded up

Is it just the Northernmost of the 3 buildings that is coming down? It's pretty close to the highway - I assume this is to accommodate the new lane for the exit onto Bruce there?

I'm just looking at this in greater detail now and realizing the magnitude of this interchange - will it really be 7 lanes each direction just South of Victoria? ie, Northbound 85 starting just South of Victoria would be, from inside to outside, Lane 1-2 Express, Lane 3-4 Collector, Lane 5-6 for New 7 Ramp and then Lane 7 for the Bruce exit?!

It would be really neat if someone (hint hint Markster Big Grin) could overlay the diagram with some transparency over a Google satellite image of the current setup!

Already done by Bingemans:

Oh! I had never seen the other portions of the highway, apart from the diagram I linked! Didn't realize it would link up with Bridge St. That's fantastic news! Have been thinking they need a new connection to the rest of Kitchener for a while now.

RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - Canard - 12-10-2015

@ Smore - I was thinking one where the new design had a layer transparency of like 40%, so we could still see what was going on below.

Also of note from the Planning and Works agenda, the Cambridge East Boundary Road alignment.
C1, the red route, is the preferred one.

I've been using the shellard side road as my Cambridge by-pass for a while and it's getting pretty popular. They've also got a public meeting about this bypass road coming up based on all the signs posted along that road. Whichever alignment they pick will make a nice truck by-pass for highway 24 traffic and hopefully alleviate some of the heavy traffic in downtown Galt.

Mill Creek has quite a pond just there, will be interesting to see how the crossing is engineered.

In additon, the CP line is just south of there. If the Milton GO line gets extended to Cambridge, a station at this new road would be an ideal commuter location.

RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - Pheidippides - 12-19-2015

In reading about the recent Transportation Safety Board (TSB) report (http://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/tsb-releases-report-on-bus-train-crash) on the OC Transpo bus/VIA train crash in 2013 I was introduced to the concept of a "cross-product" threshold for determining when over/under passes should be built in place of level crossings.

From my understanding of the concept, if the daily number of trains passing through the intersection multiplied by the daily number of vehicles passing through the intersection exceeds a threshold of 200,000 consideration should be given to change the intersection to an overpass/underpass due to excessive risk of potential collisions.

That got me wondering what the cross-product of intersections locally might be and so I started looking at Park, Strange, Lancaster where they cross the CN line (GEXR). I have decent traffic volume, but I am struggling to figure out the train volume.

Does anyone know the number of freight trains that on average pass through that section of track on a daily basis? I think there are 8 passenger trains a day correct (2 EB VIA + 2 EB GO + 2 WB VIA + 2 WB GO = 8) and at least 2 freight trains.

For a point of comparison, Toronto has several that are pushing 1,000,000.

Strachan Ave, just to the west of Union Station, was several million, prior to its eventual grade separation last year.

(Unrelated, I found a pretty cool, very detailed analysis from 2011 of what needs to be done to run more service on the Stoville Line: http://www.gotransit.com/public/en/improve/stouffville/Stouffville_Corridor_Rail_Service_Expansion_ESR-Volume_2-Appendix_A1.pdf )

I've never counted, but its at least 2 freight trains and I don't think its any more than 4.

Apparently Manitou has not yet reopened (was scheduled to happen this past weekend) and has been pushed forward to Wednesday-Thursday. At least it will be open for Christmas...

RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - DHLawrence - 12-22-2015

The sign for the Fountain Street bridge closure was up briefly this weekend. Might be back up now; haven't been by there.
