RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - avernar - 07-05-2021

Anyone know what's going on with highway 7/8 west of Kitchener? They're doing road work and they've put large wooden power poles down the center median. They're right next to the shoulder on one side and then shift over to the median for the other direction. What's the purpose of those poles?

RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - jamincan - 07-05-2021

Whereabouts is the work being done? There was an EA done a few years ago on widening 7/8 to 4-lanes through to Stratford. http://www.7and8corridorstudy.ca/maps.html

They're doing work on the bridge/culvert at the creek between Trussler and Queen.

That's to far west.  A timio wrote, between Trussler and Queen.

They were redoing the drainage in the median and did work on the culvert.  But now those wooden poles were put in and they're just way to close to the median shoulders.

It looked like they were creating cross over lanes for westbound traffic, which I'd imagine will be swapped once they do what they need to do on the one half, then they'll repeat the other half.

The work never ceases. I can't remember the last time highway work wasn't being done in the region, be it the 401, highway 8, the expressway, etc. I can't only recall back to the mid 80's, that would have been the highway 8 bypass.

Yeah, I saw the crossover.  The power poles follow the crossover to the other side.  But this is the first time I've seen a need for those poles for this type, or any type, of highway work.

May just be for lighting as the maneuver to cross over could be unexpected or dangerous if not lit properly.

Could be.  But retro reflective signs and barriers have been used in the past for that along with the portable flashing arrows. I might be driving by today, will take a look if they did anything with them yet.

Drove by today after lunch.  It's for lighting.  They had the light arms mounted and a crew was finishing stringing the wire to the last half dozen poles.

Don't think anyone has posted about this, there was a sewer leak at the Bridge/Lancaster roundabout on Tuesday. The roundabout will be closed for several weeks (!) for repairs. Long detour for folks on the other side of the river.

Wow that's quite different from what they originally said, glad they figured out another way!

It should absolutely be a roundabout given the new developments and increased traffic on Conservation Drive, but they're apparently unwilling to expropriate the land at this time. I guess a messy four-way stop is better than the current blind two-way stop, but expropriating that little barn on the corner would greatly improve safety.

I drove through here a couple times on Saturday and it was... interesting. A lot of people are still not treating it as a 4-way stop. I saw several cars blow through the stop signs on Erbsville Rd, and cars on Conservation Dr sitting and waiting even though they had the right of way. I maintain this really should be a roundabout given the upcoming further development on Conservation Dr. I wonder how many collisions that little barn on the corner has caused over the years.

RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - jamincan - 07-19-2021

A lot of cyclists go through the intersection, either continuing south on Erbsville or turning onto Conservation, and the traffic through there can be quite unpredictable. I was turning left onto Conservation on my bike once and nearly got flattened by a lady in a SUV gunning it across Conservation as soon as the traffic cleared heading north. I was waiting directly in front of her the whole time too, waiting for the same break in traffic to turn, but somehow was completely invisible. (And no I was not dressed in black)
