RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - Bob_McBob - 09-14-2019 Am I the only one wholly unimpressed by how few drivers WRPS manages to nab in these safety blitzes? A 4 day campaign and they managed a grand total of 14 speeders per day and a single distracted driving charge? I could stand on the corner of any intersection and catch distracted drivers all day, and school zones are rife with speeders, but they only seem to target people going 20+ over. And it does nothing to change driver behaviour because they aren't there the other 361 days of the year and the roads haven't been designed to limit speed. https://www.wrps.on.ca/en/news/back-to-school-safety-enforcement-campaign-results-in-more-than-100-charges-within-school-areas.aspx RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - danbrotherston - 09-14-2019 (09-14-2019, 03:33 PM)Bob_McBob Wrote: Am I the only one wholly unimpressed by how few drivers WRPS manages to nab in these safety blitzes? Although those numbers seem lower than most blitzes. RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - creative - 09-15-2019 From the link. “In total, the Waterloo Regional Police Service laid the following charges during the Back to School Safety Enforcement Campaign: Speeding Charges: 56 Fail to stop for Stop Sign: 9 Distracted Driving Charges (Handheld Device): 1 Bicycle Violation: 0 Fail to Stop for School Bus: 4 Total Charges (other violations included): 101” RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - MidTowner - 09-16-2019 From CTV: Car smashes through bus shelter RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - jamincan - 09-16-2019 I don't know if this is the best thread for this, but I wanted to share this article that provides a really compelling criticism of the transportation engineering profession and the backward thinking (literally) endemic within it. https://www.strongtowns.org/journal/2019/9/16/four-ways-traffic-engineers-thwart-public-will RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - Acitta - 09-16-2019 Dutch roundabouts are terrifying. At least in the eyes of foreign planners and engineers. Dutch road users, including the most vulnerable ones – people walking and cycling – prefer roundabouts over signalised intersections. I'm sure the police will be along with a nice "shared responsibility" platitude to reassure the drivers, of course, I get to continue to live in terror. RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - Spokes - 09-17-2019 My goodness. RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - MidTowner - 09-17-2019 From the CBC: Man in life-threatening condition after being hit in Kitchener parking lot. This one is sort of scary because it happened in a community centre parking lot at 9:45 on a Saturday morning. Yes, the victim was sitting in the parking lot (with some belongings), which he ought not to have been doing. But no one should be driving in such a way that it's possible to hit anyone or anything (apparently someone stationary, in this case) in the parking lot of a community centre. I hope the man recovers. RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - Bob_McBob - 09-17-2019 According to CTV, the parking lot was completely empty with clear visibility at the time of the incident. It looks a lot like the victim was sitting at the end of that curb, and the driver was apparently so inattentive they may have actually pinned him under the car. WRPS say there is almost nothing they can charge the driver with because it happened in a parking lot. I guess it's ok to mow down pedestrians as long as you aren't on the road https://kitchener.ctvnews.ca/man-airlifted-to-hospital-after-being-struck-by-vehicle-in-kitchener-parking-lot-1.4593303 RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - panamaniac - 09-17-2019 (09-17-2019, 01:48 PM)Bob_McBob Wrote: According to CTV, the parking lot was completely empty with clear visibility at the time of the incident. RE: General Road and Highway Discussion - MidTowner - 09-17-2019 That's exactly what they seem to be saying, that there will be no charges due to the location of the crash. I can't really understand that. |
