Both Marten's Furniture Wonderland and Comfort Plus (Big Bill's) are having Retirement Closing sales after both being Open for 49 Years.

Things sound a bit more positive for MEC: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/mec-layoffs-closures-1.5756909

An ideas what store they'll be closing? Hopefully it's a secondary suburban store in a larger market, but I have a feeling Kitchener's would be high on the list. I've not been overly impressed with their engagement in local events/clubs/activities and so have tried to keep my business at other competing local retailers who I feel make a larger impact, but they are still valuable to have around.

North York, I'd bet. They hadn't really made inroads on the Asian communities there. I think it could actually have been a significant growth opportunity in terms of expanding the market, but I hear that it didn't work out.

Looks like someone is trying to burn down a bunch of walmarts. Reports of the tp isle going up at sunrise, stanley park and bridgeport.

TP isle? Toilet paper aisle?

RE: General Retail News - panamaniac - 10-21-2020

Now that they had a proper news article posted this morning...

https://www.kitchenertoday.com/police-beat/police-investigating-arsons-at-three-walmart-stores-in-k-w-2809484

Apparently someone went into the three Walmart locations, starting at Sunrise at 9:17, then the Stanley Park one at 9:55 and the Bridgeport one at 10:20 last night and lit the Toilet Paper on fire. Looks like due to the smoke damage, all the stores will need to write off their merchandise. I would not be surprised those three locations will be closed for at least a month while they clear out the old stock, repair the smoke damage, and then restock everything.

As I frequent the Bridgeport one due to a cat that will only eat a brand of wet cat food only sold at Walmart and no other brand (Trust me, I wasted a lot of money over the years trying), this will be a pain for me now as I need to take a bus across town to either the Boardwalk one, or the LRT to the one at Fairview Park so I can feed the bugger.

I'm just glad this was not a repeat of the Dollarama fire on Albert Street that happened a few years ago where the buildings was destroyed.

I am sure that in the next day or so, once they cross reference the security tapes at all 3 stores at those times, they will either identify who did it, or we will see it on the news.

Edit: This photo has been floating around since last night, I can't confirm if it is legit or not, but a reverse image search shows the first instance appearing last night around the time this happened. https://i.redd.it/1z9ai2281du51.jpg

I've never tried it, so I can't vouch for it, but it looks like Walmart has free shipping on orders over $35, if that helps you.

I did it twice, once for pickup in store (At the Bridgeport location actually) for a pre-order of a game, and the second order directly to me as it was something not sold in stores (2 items so I could get the free shipping), which they sent separately and used 2 different couriers.

Find the person that wasn't allowed to return their TP from the panic buying in the winter and you have your suspect. They are trying to induce demand so they can move their inventory.

Google is now showing the Stanley Park Walmart location as permanently closed.  Has anyone heard anything about this?  All I could find was a reddit discussion from the Spring speculating that the Walmart was going to close and be replaced by a Canadian Tire.  The Walmart space doesn't seem to be much bigger than the current Victoria St location.  Presumably that would be the location to move if true?  Also talks about Shoppers moving in, which does seem to be in the works.   The reddit discussion also linked to a plan from the First Capital site:

First response has been working around the clock everyday to renovate from the fire. I cant imagine they are spending that kind of money to close it .

Well ... the site plan definitely does show the Canadian Tire. But the plan is from almost a year ago, and the filename implies that it's a site plan (for prospective tenants for the 3,831 sqft remaining space) effective in April 2020. Is it still happening? Things people want to know! Smile

RE: General Retail News - tomh009 - 11-01-2020

Curiouser and curiouser ... there is also a more recent site plan uploaded:
https://fcr.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Stanley-Park-Mall_CURRENT-SITE-PLAN_AUG_2020-2.pdf

This one shows Walmart instead of Canadian Tire, and "Coming Soon" instead of SDM.
