RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - timc - 12-15-2022 I'm scratching my head. We should widen the road to make it safer for pedestrians? Uhh, I thought I saw this article posted here but maybe not. The quote itself is from https://kitchener.ctvnews.ca/cyclist-airlifted-after-crash-in-waterloo-1.6194122. There's more info in the Record article: https://www.therecord.com/news/waterloo-region/2022/12/14/police-close-waterloo-streets-after-collision-wednesday-morning.html. Woman driving a Camry hits a man riding a bicycle at Weber and Marshall (pretty close to my place...) RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - Chris - 12-22-2022 This is neat. A guy in BC built his own bike plow. https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/2151509571712 RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - tomh009 - 12-23-2022 (12-15-2022, 11:25 PM)timc Wrote: I'm scratching my head. We should widen the road to make it safer for pedestrians? Could it be that the pedestrian in question means that the road should be wider so that there is more room for bicycles? That's about the only thing that makes sense to me. RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - ac3r - 12-23-2022 (12-22-2022, 11:02 AM)Chris Wrote: This is neat. A guy in BC built his own bike plow. I remember doing that as a wee lad! RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - Acitta - 12-30-2022 Stats Canada says commuters choose to drive (video) Driving dominates for preferred commute to work in Waterloo region RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - ijmorlan - 12-30-2022 (12-30-2022, 09:17 PM)Acitta Wrote: Stats Canada says commuters choose to drive (video) Obviously. People use what is convenient and available. If we had good bicycle infrastructure and public transit everywhere, those would get used more. We've built our cities so that it is hard to not drive, unless you specifically choose to do so. RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - bravado - 12-31-2022 I find it entirely hilarious that the article didn't even mention students. As if the only reason to move around the city is to go to work, which is just so miserable. I think it's less funny and more revealing. While Outhit's article I can believe is intentionally misleading...the rest of them probably just reveal unconscious biases. Our society is car brained to be sure...but we're also blind to a whole host of other things...you see it in what trips are counted...only commute trips...traditionally male, employed, missing errands, trip chaining, etc. RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - SF22 - 01-24-2023 What kind of bike parking is available at Fairview Mall? I'm trying to see via Google Streetview, but the images are from 2020 and the entire front-end got redesigned since then, so I'm not sure what's really there. As far as I can tell, there are 3 parking posts on the Kingsway side by the food court. Is that honestly it? (Also, would it make sense to have a separate thread for "Is there bike parking?" if people are looking for bike parking availability at places across the region? People could post photos of infrastructure to give others an idea of the amount/quality of parking available in different areas.) There is good bike parking in front of the Walmart that was installed when they renovated the front. It is a row of inverted square u-posts. Feels pretty wild that the only bike parking at the entire mall is by the Walmart, though! RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - KevinL - 01-24-2023 There are a few racks at the Ion station, as well, but those are not on mall property. This Walmart is an exception. |
