RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - jamincan - 07-27-2019 I'd probably take Cedar/Krug across and then Dom Cardillo Trail or River (I like trails though) down to King and then across on Riverbank/Allendale to Fountain. An e-bike would be perfect and I've actually been noticing more lately. I've actually noticed a guy on an e-fatbike on River a few times recently. Have you gone to one of the local retailers to try out an e-bike? I'm pretty sure Ziggy's sells them. I tried timing bike and 301/302, as I'm going roughly Vic Park to Toyota, and it came in at an hour. Yikes, that's a pretty anti-bike commute. I'm not sure if your priority is time or safety/pleasantness, but if it's the latter, one option may be to bike to Conestoga College (which is quite pleasant) and then take the 203. But you're probably still looking at an hour or so. RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - clasher - 07-28-2019 (07-27-2019, 08:47 PM)Viewfromthe42 Wrote: Thanks, I'll take a look. I like riverbend road even though it’s kind of rolling hills. If you want to cut some of the in-town climbing, you can cross the expressway at Franklin and cut through the cemetery and end up at river road and old Chicopee. Saves going down Lackener at least. I can map it out if you do t know that area, there is a trail from Franklin that doesn’t show up on google to get into the cemetery and then another trail at the end of Ferguson to access river road. I think Ziggys might have some of trek e-assist bikes, that’d my place to check. I dunno anything about them though. RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - jamincan - 07-29-2019 With an e-bike, hills are far less of a concern, though, so I'd favour any route that stays on quieter or more bike-friendly roads/trails. My two suggested alternatives: Summer: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30691990 Winter: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30692009 (basically just stays on roads instead of trails. RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - robdrimmie - 07-29-2019 With regards to the roads where there's only space for one bike lane, my preference would be for it to be on the uphill side. Not for any data-based reasoning, just personal preference. I'm less stable and confident when going uphill, so dedicated space and more room for powered vehicle traffic to pass me is much nicer. When going downhill I have more control and as a result I feel as though, in an emergency situation, I'd have more brain power to apply towards where and how to bail safely. My two suggested alternatives: Ironically, I prefer trails in winter. I have even less trust of drivers, and bike lanes are far more obstructed. However, the trails that I generally biked are well maintained in winter. RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - Viewfromthe42 - 07-29-2019 Thanks for the maps! I'm a bit south of the fountain Street Cemetary, so the end would be a bit different, but I could see trying this. If there were a rail-adjacent trail, hoo boy would that help a ton. RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - jamincan - 07-29-2019 You need to build yourself one of these: https://makezine.com/2012/04/30/no-weld-rail-bike-conversion/ RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - clasher - 08-01-2019 Part of the separated cycling lanes on Queens Blvd. were rideable today, I started at Belmont and there is a line the whole way to Westheights when heading west. Bollards and rubber curbs are in place along west of Westmount and down near Westheights they've finished from F-H down the hill. It's wide enough and fairly smooth most of the time, it looks like there is some other road work on Queens near the one public school closer to F-H. Heading toward downtown there are a few potholes and other rough sections I'd have hoped they would have fixed since they have all the equipment there and are doing paving but I dunno if they will fix the potholes or not. I've been using Queen's Blvd. to get out of town for a while so I'm glad to have the full facilities... gonna be more annoying to leapfrog the bus but that's about the only thing I could really complain about. (From the corner of Queens and Westmount, also there's a sweet camo hoodie on the ground there if anyone needs one) RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - danbrotherston - 08-08-2019 The city and the cycling and trails committee were out today for a media event on the new bike lanes. RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - robdrimmie - 08-09-2019 I get the need for good photos, but there’s something about a bunch of people stopped and blocking a lane of traffic that tickles my funny bone. RE: Cycling in Waterloo Region - goggolor - 08-09-2019 He's mentioned his electric bike on Twitter before... someone pointed out that the mayor bragged about bringing his bike on the iON on the opening week, but electric bicycles aren't allowed onboard (maybe a holdover from the rules for storing bikes on busses). I think they're looking at changing that rule. I think they're looking at changing that rule. This is it is so important that our elected officials are broadly diverse. Someone who bikes, someone who rides an ebike, someone who takes transit, etc. Without that, I doubt they'd bother to look at the rule. This is a more broad truth as well. |
