RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - ac3r - 08-17-2021 (08-16-2021, 10:39 PM)Acitta Wrote: Well, lots of people cycle year round in Finland, which gets a lot of snow, so I don't accept the argument that winter is a barrier to cycling. I cycle year round and most of the time it is not that cold. There is no bad weather, only a poor choice of clothing (something that seems common among car drivers I have observed). I forget who did it (possibly City Beautiful?), but there is a video that explains that one reason Finnish people continue to bike in the winter is because Finnish cities do an incredible job snow plowing the pathways and sidewalks. We have a serious lack of snow removal here, not to mention a lot of our bike infrastructure is on or very close to live roadways which makes it incredibly dangerous. If a car hit some ice and slid into a bike lane, they could easily run over a cyclist. Finland has a lot of trails that are well separated from live traffic and they remove snow very quickly. Our mild winters also complicate things as things melt and freeze repeatedly. I particularly enjoy watching the last minute or so where he rides a bike path for a long time, and I find it fun to imagine trails like that as an option for my bike ride to work. Currently I have to ride mostly in what he calls bike gutters. RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - Acitta - 08-21-2021 The concrete lining streams in the City of Kitchener is being ripped out piece by piece and replaced with green infrastructure like trees, shrubs and floodplain. https://outline.com/nfcgHY Out with the concrete, in with nature RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - Acitta - 08-21-2021 Province limits affordable housing to region’s ‘urban spine’ RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - dtkvictim - 08-21-2021 (08-21-2021, 12:19 PM)Acitta Wrote: The concrete lining streams in the City of Kitchener is being ripped out piece by piece and replaced with green infrastructure like trees, shrubs and floodplain. This is great. It is! Although, I have been impressed how much nature has overcome the concrete even on Schneider creek: there is more green than there is exposed concrete along much of its length. I would like to see the results at Idlewood Creek -- does anyone know which portion has been naturalized, if not all? RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - BruceAshe - 08-25-2021 Looks like demolition is starting on the properties on Duke and Madison. Hydro lines have been disconnected and trees have been getting torn down all morning. Nothing started on the actual buildings yet though. RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - Acitta - 08-26-2021 Kitchener to create a second pedestrian street near the Kitchener Market RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - plam - 08-27-2021 (08-26-2021, 09:53 PM)Acitta Wrote: Kitchener to create a second pedestrian street near the Kitchener Market Yes, I'd replied to the poll: https://www.engagewr.ca/pedestrianfirstmarket RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - ac3r - 08-27-2021 We got a short shoutout in the latest City Beautiful video about urban shopping malls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFG90WI8wI4 It's a bit odd, though. His narration with the clips he has seems to imply they were successful, when they were anything but. RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - Lens - 08-27-2021 A few renders of the Oktoberfest Castle renos can be seen here: https://whitneyre.com/property/17-benton-st-kitchener-2/ RE: General Urban Kitchener Updates and Rumours - jeffster - 08-28-2021 (08-27-2021, 07:41 PM)Lens Wrote: A few renders of the Oktoberfest Castle renos can be seen here: https://whitneyre.com/property/17-benton-st-kitchener-2/ Lease rate: is that per year? That's typical for commercial leases. |
