The region has built a number of office buildings at this scale, but due to what I consider poor planning by the city of Waterloo they are all in car oriented office parks like David Johnston Research & Technology Park or what was probably to worst planning decision in the last 20 years allowing blackberry to build the HQ in a farmers field on the edge of town with no connection to the LRT that was already being planned.

To the folks who think this building is meh or ugly, please name a better recently built office building other than the Breithaupt Block?

You can't compare it to office buildings in the suburbs.  This is the first class A office building built in DTK in over 25 years - and right on King St. - they could have done something special with it.  If you compare it to Perimeter's own building planned for King and Allen, 345 King looks pretty basic.  It's still a great addition to the core.  It's just kind of boring.

I suppose you could say that about any private development.

I don't understand the objection to the building either. I mean, it's small and modest in design, but that's why it works. The glass is a beautiful facade to have on King Street (especially that section) and at night time it'll let out a nice amount of light. The concrete on the sides of the building are nice and warm looking despite being quite bold, and they match aspects of the neighbouring office tower nicely. I really think the design was intentionally supposed to match the neighbouring 305 King. 305 is of the modernist era, but it looks exceptionally contemporary for something built in the 1960s and so having 345 King be visually similar is a good design plan. It suits the area it's in and shall look pretty good from any angle. I'll be curious to see the inside of it, because atmosphere is particularly important to get right in an office building.

In one of the recent pics, it didn't even look that small - comparable to the Waterloo Trust tower overall, with the bigger footprint making up for the reduced height. I wonder how they compare in terms of total floor space?

This is what I was thinking, too. It's not intended to be a an exact clone of 305, but surely they were looking for some consistency/continuity of design.

As of today around 1pm. Based on the chips visible in the concrete I think it's possible they'll be doing at least a clean-up pass and that this may not be the final product.

I do think that overhang over the sidewalk will be very nice.

It's really turning out pretty sleek.
